Climate and the Environment
Addressing the climate crisis is perhaps the most pressing challenge of our time. Those living in developing countries are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. In response SSHJM WACFO have become increasingly active in supporting mitigation and adaptation. SSHJM WACFO builds community resilience to the impacts of climate change and environmental damage and supports communities to protect their local environment.
WACFO focuses on natural resources and low cost practices in effort to address effects of climatic change in the communities of Amuru through established low cost irrigation systems to support vulnerable small-scale farmers with all year-round access to water and constant vegetable growth, distribution of improved vegetable seeds, acquiring improved knowledge to practice climate Resilient Agriculture practices e.g. agro-forestry and tree nursery producing various woodlot and fruit trees, establishment of a shade net at Winefride Tyrrell Centre aid mass production, to act as wind breakers, control soil erosion and help in rainfall formation, thus improving on the soil science and the environmental protection, supported with seeds and use of Indigenous Micro- Organisms as bio pesticide formulation and application for pest and disease control. Awareness creation campaigns and advocacy to key stake holders, duty bearers especially local and regional government targeted community schools to promote tree planting and agro forestry.
About this theme
The high rate of deforestation is altering the climate, leading to crop failures and livestock deaths that cause economic losses and undermine food security in Northern Uganda. The growing population demands higher food production levels, yet access to suitable agricultural land is declining, and forest, soil, and water resources are increasingly restricted and degraded. Addressing these issues is essential for Climate Resilience Agriculture activities.
Our work & the Global Goals
SSHJM's work in Climate Resilient Livelihoods is supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 2: Zero Hunger, Goal No. 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal No. 13: Climate Action.
